The tournament in Cincinnati was played for the first time already back in 1899. During the decades, the tournament developed and is now known as the Western & Southern Open or also Cincinnati Masters.

It is the highest category on the ATP circuit and the 2nd highest on the WTA circuit. Therefore, every year, fans can expect the best tennis players in the world to compete at the tournament.

The Western & Southern Open is played at the Linder Family Tennis Center in Cincinnati. The centre features 17 courts with four stadiums – Center Court, Grandstand Court, Court 3, and Court 10. These have a total capacity of more than 20,000 people.

During the long history of the tournament, some of the greatest tennis players of all time triumphed in Cincinnati. From the ATP Tour, the champions include John McEnroe, Andre Agassi, Pete Sampras, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, and Novak Djokovic.

The women’s champions include notable names like Margaret Court, Lindsay Davenport, Kim Clijsters, Maria Sharapova, and Serena Williams. The WTA tournament was not held from 1974 – 1987 and 1989 – 2003.

In 2020, the Western & Southern Open moved to the Flushing Meadows to Billie Jean King National Tennis Center due to the Coronavirus. Also, a lot of top players withdrew from the tournament including players like Rafael Nadal, Gael Monfils, Ashleigh Barty, Simona Halep, and Elina Svitolina.
